Happy (almost) Spring! I know that it’s not technically Spring yet, but when the temperature starts getting into the 60s and 70s here, then it’s Spring to me! 🙂
During this time of year (late February), I just feel like… I’m over winter. I’ve enjoyed it, but it’s overstayed its welcome. It’s time for it to go. So, when I received some Spring and Easter themed items from Oriental Trading (so generous!!), I was super excited to put them to use!
First off, I’m not using it on the mantel, because I just couldn’t make it work on my skinny mantel. But, my favorite item that I received is the bouy terrarium. Inside it, I put a bird’s nest that has natural-looking eggs already glued inside it. I really like it inside the terrarium, because it is a little delicate and I wanted to protect it.
For the mantel, I used a set of spring boxes, a DIY wood pennant, and the white paper mache bunny. I was really pleased with all of these items. The spring boxes were a little smaller than I had envisioned but that was my own fault for not reading the description. It ended up working out though, because they fit perfectly on my skinny mantel. The paper mache bunny is super cute, but it too is very delicate. I broke the poor guys head off just trying to pull him out of his styrofoam packing. In a wire basket I had picked up at Wal-Mart, I also used a bag of eggs that look a lot like the eggs that are in the bird’s nest, but they seem to be a little more sturdy.
For the DIY wood pennant, I created a two-sided “Easter” and “Spring” banner for the mantel. I will post detailed instructions on how I did that in my next post. For that project, I used the DIY wood pennant, acrylic paints, pastel washi tape, and some chalkboard paint I already owned. I really love how it turned out. I just hung it up with a piece of twine.
Side note: Oriental Trading has a great selection of washi tape at much better prices than I have found most places.
For my large piece to anchor the mantel, I wanted to use this oversized art piece that a great friend of the family had given me. I loved the size and shape, but I didn’t have anywhere in the house to use the print right now. However, I really did love the print and didn’t want to destroy it in any way.
So, using some peel and stick chalkboard paper that I had picked up a while back at Michael’s and Ollie’s, I covered just the glass with chalkboard and hung a great boxwood wreath that I got at Target on clearance!
And now, here’s the finished product! I am loving the way it turned out! If you’re wondering, the large burlap bunny on the mantel came from Big Lots. Also, the geese I got at Target (from Smith & Hawken) a few years ago, and the bunny on the ground was from Hobby Lobby.
Overall, I love everything that I got and I will definitely continue to order more items from Oriental Trading! This has been a really great experience!
