Our previous home had a very contemporary vibe — black countertops, maple cabinets — but it also had a definite lack of counter and cabinet space. We bought a free-standing kitchen island to try and alleviate some of that problem, and it worked – for a while.
When we moved into our new home, it has tons of cabinet space and a much more french country vibe, so the island was banished to my craft room closet for storage. After living here a while, I wanted a space for a coffee station (I had seen so many great ones on Pinterest and became inspired). I really wanted a space where guests could make a cup of coffee without feeling odd about going through our cabinets looking for supplies, cups, etc. I know, I know… I’m not the “hostess with the mostess”, so to speak. We just have our fair share of guests that like to wake up at the crack of dawn and I, clearly, do not.
At first, I was just going to run down to IKEA and pick up a small cabinet to sit in the unused space in our kitchen, but then I had a stroke of genius (or a stroke of “I need to find a way to not spend any money on this project”) I roped the DH into helping and we pulled the island into the garage for a little DIY makeover.
Here’s a picture of the before:
And the after:
I’m loving it! On the plus side, it freed up a lot of counter space in the kitchen! Yay!
