Shopping Paleo at Sam’s Club!
For a while, we were only members at Costco. I love Costco, and I still do. However, there’s only two locations here in town and neither are super convenient to our house. So, when I caught a LivingSocial deal for a Sam’s membership, I decided to jump on it.
My only issue with Costco was the fresh meat. We bought a lot of ground turkey and chicken tenderloins, and I was rarely pleased with the quality of either. So, when I saw that our Sam’s sold fresh, local ground turkey, I was sold.
After shopping at Sam’s for about a year and a half (and being on Paleo most of that time), I have a list of items that I tend to buy every time. I call it my – sort of – “go to” paleo shopping list. Sometime we need to buy supplemental items that we’ve run out of, like honey and almond flour (for example), but these items below are the ones that I find myself purchasing on a weekly basis.
First, stop… meats.
We hardly (if ever) eat red meat, so my first stop is always the case with the chicken and turkey. I always purchase the ground turkey and either the chicken tenderloins or chicken breasts (whichever has the latest sell by date).
Now, on to produce…
Sam’s Club has a great selection of greens. Any kind of shredded lettuce you could imagine and mostly around $2 per bag. It can’t be beat!!
This section is also where I pick up shredded cabbage to make coleslaw and cauliflower to rice.
If anyone knows me and my prepubescent
obsession love of Popeye, then you will know that I can’t pass this up!
We use A LOT of bananas. We use them mostly in our morning smoothies, but they also make great snacks!
Also — apples! These are great to use in our apple pie smoothie (recipe coming up soon) and as a snack with some almond butter. Sometimes, I will venture out into berries and peaches, but for the most part, bananas and apples are my favorite.
After the greens, this section is where I pick up most of my last items. This is where I will get sweet potatoes, onions, avocados, and green peppers.
On most visits, I stick with the fresh meat and produce sections. From the dairy case, we sometimes get eggs and unsweetened almond milk. If you look in the bottom of my cart, you’ll see I picked up almond milk on this trip.
From the frozen case, I sometimes get the bags of frozen fruit for smoothies, and every once in a while, I have to stock up on bottled water.
From the dry goods aisles, there are only a few things that we sometimes pick up — almond butter, honey, almond flour, spices, and tomato paste (for making ketchup).
A little post visit update: I found this turkey bacon on my most recent trip to Sam’s. Can’t wait to try it!!
Our LivingSocial deal included the Sam’s Club Plus membership (which I thought I would get rid of the first chance I got), but I’ve begun to really appreciate the perks that come along with the upgraded membership. I like to do my grocery shopping first thing on Monday mornings, so I really appreciate being able to get in and get out early! Also, the cash back is a great perk as well. I get the 2% cash back with my Costco membership, but I like how at Sam’s I can use my rewards throughout the year instead of waiting for a check at the end of the year for the full amount.
Do you shop at Sam’s or Costco? What are your go-to Paleo purchases?
