So sorry, but lately my blogging skills have been… well, lacking for lack of a better word. We’ve been so crazy busy working around the house these past couple of weeks, and I wasn’t really at a point where I could share any of it.
For starters, we have been trying to open the pool. If you ask me in June or July what I love most about our house, I wouldn’t hesitate to say the backyard — especially our screened-in porch and pool. If you asked me in April or May what I hate most about our house, I would, without hesitation, say the pool. By the time April rolls around, it’s an algae filled cesspool that doesn’t seem like it will ever get clean. Case and point — here’s a picture of the pool we started with in April. Oh yeah, it’s gross.
So, like every year, the first step is to kill the algae which means shock – and a lot of it. The problem is we decided to shock it before we went on vacation at the beginning of May, which was fine until we actually went on vacation and it looked like a green mess again when we came back. So, we were back to square one. Here’s where we were after the second round of shock. Better — but it’s still filled with dead algae that has to be vacuumed to waste.
One silver lining to the whole thing is we picked up some valuable plumbing skills along the way. It seems that one of our pipes burst during the harsh winter we had, and we couldn’t vacuum out the dead algae until we got it fixed. After a few plumbing lessons on YouTube, we decided to give it a go, and I’m pleased to say the pipes are fixed and still holding strong! Yay, us!
After a couple of passes with the vacuum, we were at this point. Almost… but not quite clean.
And now, I’m pleased to report — the pool is clean!! I’m super excited to get one job crossed off the list. Next is the spa, but we’ve got to hire a professional for that. We’ve got a lot of corrosion around the light and metal/rust staining, and I’m not about to get in that water and start messing around with electricity!!
Now that we are past Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer, I can’t wait to get in the pool and enjoy our backyard again!! Now, if the water would just warm up!
