There are a few choices that I made when building our house that I regret now…
- Not adding crown molding to the kitchen cabinets.
- Removing the window in our master bathroom.
- Mostly… the placement of the fireplace in the family room.
We have a long narrow family room off our kitchen. It’s already awkward to decorate and it forces me to put the sofa right in the middle of the room which breaks up the flow. I’ve tried it different ways, but no other furniture arrangement seems to work.
When we built the house, we had the option of either putting the fireplace in the middle of our longest wall or in the corner. I was of the mind set at the time that the longest wall was the only place to put the TV with the stand. So, we decided to put the fireplace in the corner.
Now that we have a flat TV that hangs on the wall, I so wish the fireplace was in the middle of the room. I would love to have the fireplace as a focal point with some built ins on the wall surrounding it. But, hind sight is 20-20. Right?
So, I’ve been trying to find some way to make the fireplace in the corner more interesting. Of course, I’ve been decorating the mantel seasonally, but nothing seemed to make that area any more of a focal point (except for that year that I put the Christmas tree next to the fireplace — that was pretty, but short lived).
So, I went on the hunt for a wall treatment that I could use. I was originally thinking shiplap… and then vinyl plank flooring, but both of those seemed like a huge expense or a huge pain to put up — especially when I wasn’t 100% sure that I wanted either.
Then, one day I was perusing Amazon (as one does) and I came across this vinyl adhesive film for only $3.99 per roll! I figured that, since I would only need a few rolls, I could add some easy interest to the wall without a huge investment (at least until I came up with a more permanent solution). The best part? I only ended up spending $16!!
The hardest part was matching the pattern and I had to settle for one area where it doesn’t match. But, all in all, I can live with that.
Here’s the wall now. You can see the before here. Now, I just need to get on the stick and get this thing decorated for fall!!!
