For our Christmas mantel this year, I wanted to do something a little different. That meant, a few months ago, I started scouring Pinterest for project ideas.
When I came across these two wall art ideas, I knew I had to make one for myself!!
I loved the idea of the illumination of this Christmas Light Canvas from Ask Anna…
And, the phrasing and font selection of this piece of art on The Lily Pad Cottage’s Christmas mantel…
So, I set out to make my own version.
First, I took my 24″ x 30″ canvas outside (another great $8.99 find at Ollie’s!!) and painted it with some chalkboard spray paint.
While the canvas was drying, I recreated the phrase from The Lily Pad Cottage in publisher. When I was happy with how it looked, I printed it out on a transparency.
I invaded hubby’s office (because it’s the darkest room in the house with the curtains closed) and transferred the artwork to my canvas with an overhead projector.
To transfer the artwork, I first traced it in white pencil and then filled it in with a white paint pen. It was an extra step, but it definitely gave me more control and a cleaner finished product!
The next step was to add the lights. I purchased this string of 20 LED lights from Wal-Mart for $5. I wanted to have more lights but ended up trading less lights for the flexibility of battery operation and a timer.
I used a Phillips head screwdriver to poke holes in my canvas and poked the LED lights through. To keep them sturdy, I stapled the strand to the canvas frame in strategic places.
Here’s the finished product in the room!
I really love how it turned out!! Thanks to Ask Anna and The Lily Pad Cottage for the ideas and inspiration!!!!
